Effective 1 January 2026Madeira’s stunning trails and scenic walking routes are some of the island’s best-loved treasures. And now, to make the experience even better for visitors and locals alike, the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has introduced a new fee and reservation system for classified walking trails. This new system helps manage visitor flow, improve safety, protect sensitive environments, and ensure everyone enjoys these incredible trails with minimal crowding.

Why the New System?

The goal of the updated fee and reservation framework is simple:

✔ Manage visitor numbers more effectively

✔ Smooth out arrivals throughout the day

✔ Improve safety and trail experience

✔ Support environmental sustainability

✔ Make access predictable and fair for all. To do this, IFCN has structured trail access in 30-minute time slots, spreading visitors from sunrise to sunset to prevent overcrowding and preserve the landscape.

How Reservations Work (SIMplifica Platform)

All trail reservations — for individuals and tour groups alike — must be made through the SIMplifica platform. This is the official system for booking and access control, and every visitor (regardless of age or status) must register in advance.

Trail Access Fees (2026 Prices)

Here’s how fees shape up for the 2026 season:

Visitor TypePrice Per Trail
General Visitors & Operators without Agreement€4.50 per person per trail
Operators with Agreement (Agencies / Tours)€3.00 per person
Residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM)Free, but registration & reservation are required
PR1 – Pico do Areeiro Trail (after reopening in April 2026)€10.50 (General) / €7.00 (With Protocol)
Important: Residents don’t pay access fees — but the reservation is still mandatory to control visitor numbers and comply with conservation measures.

Booking & Payment Rules

Advance Reservations

  • Operators with agreement can pre-book up to 30 days in advance.
  • Before 30 days from the trail date, bookings don’t generate an invoice yet and can be adjusted freely.

Invoicing & Payment

  • 30 days before the activity — confirmed bookings automatically generate invoices.
  • Between 29 days and the trail date — invoices are generated as soon as bookings are confirmed.

Payment deadlines:

  • 30-day bookings: Payment due at least 48 hours before the activity, with up to 28 days credit.
  • Last-minute bookings: Must be paid within 7 days.

If payment isn’t made on time, the reservation is automatically cancelled. Repeated late payments may lead to suspension of preferential booking terms.
