Description

Madeira is known for its many walks, both in the Levadas and in Veredas.

The Levadas was the solution that early settlers found to transport water from the north and the forest to the plantations and villages.

The Veredas were often the trails people used to go from one village to the other or even to cross the island!

Hiking in Madeira is definitely one of the “must do”  for our visitors.

I became a mountain guide in 2016. I truly love my job, the forest, the hikes, the views and all the peace that only Mother Nature can give us.

However, I’m not a fan of popular walks, where it’s crowded, busy, noisy and where we see visitors with a complete lack of respect and love for Nature.

If you want to experience an amazing walk in Madeira, that is not too touristy, join us in this adventure on the East side of the Island.

This hike is about 14 km and takes 5 to 6 hours.

We start easy, with about a 5,5 km walk alongside a Levada, where we will be able to see some of the vegetables and fruits grown in Machico.

Then we start our 1,5Km uphill to Boca do Risco Viewpoint, where we will stop for a few minutes for a rest and to enjoy the views.

It’s from Boca do Risco that the fun starts!

From here, we’ll hike towards Caniçal, on a trail with dramatic views of the East Coast.

There will be plenty of ups and downs, some areas with sheer drops. It is quite a technical trail, so come prepared for it!

This is a walk for people that are used to hiking and that are prepared for the physical effort.

It is not recommended for people that suffer from vertigo or are afraid of heights.
